Italian Citizenship services

There are multiple paths towards   Italian citizenship. A common path for foreigners, if possible, is to prove one’s relation to one’s ancestors or living family in Italy.  Often this can require the proper collection of documents and completion of formal procedures, for which we can assist you.

Italian citizenship via “iure sanguinis”

A foreigner with Italian ancestors makes their case based on the legal provision that Italian citizenship runs by bloodline. In other words if an Italian citizen has children, those children are recognized by the state as Italian citizens. Furthermore, the children of those children are also considered Italian citizens. Citizenship by bloodline runs indefinitely. However, citizenship can be transmitted only in the direct line, i.e. from parents to their sons and daughters.

How can you prove a direct line of Italian citizenship?

One must collect all the necessary certificates that prove your link to your Italian ancestors proving their settlement in Italy upon the formation of the Italian state on March 17, 1871. You must also prove that Italian citizenship has been transmitted to you through your family lineage without interruption.

Direct line citizenship is considered interrupted if:

-your Italian ancestor naturalized (become a Citizen of the United States or another Country) before July 1,1912.

-your Italian ancestor was naturalized prior to the birth of his/her descendant (if the descendant is not you, the Italian ancestor must not have naturalized before the birth of  the ascendant through which you would be eligible).

-your Italian ancestor in your direct line is a woman (your great grandmother, for example), born before January 1, 1948, she can only transmit her citizenship to her sons or daughters born after January, 1 1948. If this is the case your application can still be successfully submitted but shall be filed before a Court in Italy;

-your Italian ancestor  or any other of your ascendants has renounced Italian citizenship (as clarified above the oath taken by the Italian ancestor when naturalized does not count, if this has happened later than his/her descendant, through which you would be eligible, was born).

Unsure about your eligibility via direct line?

We may be able to prove your eligibility via alternative means, such as through genealogical research through our partners  to identify any ancestors you may have in Italy, thereby establishing a direct line.
