The new “Digital Nomad” Visa in Italy has finally arrived.

As of March 2024, qualified professionals from outside the EU will be able to reside and work remotely from Italy for an extended period of time, reflecting the country's commitment to embracing a new way of work.Italy recently introduced a new digital nomad visa to attract remote workers to live and work long term. The visa allows professionals to live in Italy for a year while working remotely for foreign companies, and also can be renewed after one year. This initiative aims to boost the local economy and promote Italy as an ideal destination looking both to enjoy the country’s cultural offerings combined with its lower cost of life in comparison to the economies of other advanced economies. This initiative will be particularly inviting for aspiring remote workers from the United States, who have previously faced steep bars of entry into procuring a work visa in the country. The prospect of the dolce vita whilst still maintaining a career back home should make for interesting new chapters for a variety of digital professionals.

To qualify for the digital nomad visa in Italy, applicants must meet specific requirements, including:

  • Proof of employment with a company based outside of Italy or proof of self-employment with clients predominantly outside of Italy.

  • A minimum income requirement typically around €30,000 per year.

  • Health insurance coverage for the duration of the stay in Italy.

  • A signed declaration of commitment to conduct only remote work for non-Italian clients during the stay.

  • A rental contract or proof of accommodation in Italy.

  • Clean criminal record.
